Storing peptides, oils and orals without ruining them

Storing peptides, oils and orals without ruining them

Storage gets very little attention compared with dosing, which is odd, because it is one of the few variables entirely within your control. Product degrades quietly. There is rarely an obvious sign that a vial has lost potency, so people conclude the compound did not work rather than that it was destroyed in a warm cupboard.

Different formats have genuinely different requirements, and treating them all the same is where the problems start.

Lyophilised peptides, still sealed

Dry powder is the most stable form a peptide comes in, which is why it ships that way.

  • Fridge for anything beyond a few weeks. At 2 to 8 degrees Celsius a sealed vial keeps for a long time.
  • Freezer for long term. Dry powder tolerates freezing well. This applies only to unmixed vials.
  • Room temperature is survivable briefly. Most lyophilised peptides handle shipping and a few weeks on a shelf without meaningful loss. That is a tolerance, not a storage plan.
  • Keep it dark and dry. Light degrades peptides and the powder is hygroscopic, so it pulls moisture from the air once the seal is broken.

Reconstituted peptides

Once mixed, the clock speeds up considerably.

  • Fridge, always. Never room temperature, and never the fridge door, which is the warmest part and swings in temperature every time it opens. Use a shelf at the back.
  • Never freeze a mixed vial. Ice crystal formation during freezing and thawing damages peptides in solution. Dry powder freezes fine; solution does not.
  • Weeks, not months. Bacteriostatic water suppresses bacterial growth but does nothing about chemical breakdown of the peptide itself.
  • Upright and dark. Keeping the vial upright limits contact between the solution and the stopper.

Our guide on reconstituting peptides covers the mixing process itself.

Injectable oils

Oil-based injectables are the most forgiving format, and the rules are close to the opposite of peptides.

  • Room temperature is correct. Somewhere cool, dark and stable, between roughly 15 and 25 degrees Celsius.
  • Do not refrigerate. Cold makes oil viscous and can push the hormone out of solution, which shows up as crystals in the vial.
  • Crystals are usually recoverable. If a vial has been left somewhere cold and has crystallised, warming it gently and rolling it will normally bring it back. Do not boil it or put it in a microwave.
  • Away from light. The original box is genuinely the best place for it.

Oral tablets

  • Cool, dry, dark. A drawer or cupboard, not a windowsill.
  • Humidity is the real enemy. A bathroom cabinet is one of the worst places in a house for tablets, because of repeated humidity and temperature swings from showering.
  • Leave them in the original container with any desiccant that came with it.
  • Do not refrigerate. Moving tablets in and out of a fridge causes condensation on the surface.

The four things that cause degradation

  1. Heat. The largest single factor across every format. Reaction rates roughly double for every 10 degree rise in temperature.
  2. Light. Particularly UV. This is why vials come in boxes.
  3. Temperature cycling. Repeatedly moving something between warm and cold is worse than holding it steady at the higher of the two.
  4. Moisture. Ruins dry powder and tablets. Largely irrelevant for oils.

When to throw something out

Discard rather than gamble if you see any of these:

  • A reconstituted peptide that is cloudy, has visible particles, or has changed colour.
  • An oil that stays cloudy or has particles after gentle warming.
  • Tablets that are discoloured, crumbling, soft or stuck together.
  • Any vial where the stopper or seal is damaged.
  • Anything that was left somewhere hot, such as a car in summer, for any meaningful length of time.
